2015: A Year in Review and Top 15 Reads

2015 has been an amazing year in books and blogging! Thanks to the constant book pushing of the Fizzle Reads girls, I've wholeheartedly embraced the YA genre this year. I didn't expect the 100+ new books I'd add to my tbr in the process though (not including my regular dose of NA/A) lol.

It was back in Janurary that I decided I'd be more organized with the blog and eventually made an blogging calendar to help with planning. Looking back now, I DID GOOD, if I do say so myself *pats self on the back*. I wasn't always consistent with my posts and often times I didn't go by the calendar [hahaha], but I have a visual that I stuck with it throughout the year.

Big BIG THANK YOU to all the bloggers and booklovers I've befriended this year, be it through my blog, your blog, goodreads, twitter or instagram. I've loved reading your comments, hearing from you and all your book recommendations! Everyone in the blogosphere is so supportive and loving. I may disappear now and then but you're stuck with me for a long while, you guys ;)

Here are my top 15 favorites in books:

And my top favorite read/watched/listened in 2015 for some other categories:

  • Anime: Kuroko no Basket (Honorable Mention: Haikyuu!!)
  • Manga: Akatsuki no Yona (Honorable Mention: HorimiyaGekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun)
  • TV Show: Bones (Thank you Netflix for allowing me to binge watch 9 seasons in a few months haha)
  • 2015 Music Album: Handwritten by Shawn Mendes
  • Kpop song: Baby Don't Cry by EXO (Honorable Mentions: BTS' Run and ButterflyGOT7's If You Do, EXO's Love Me Right)
  • Movie: Inside Out (PIXAR, MY QUEEN)

2015 consisted of 54 blogs posts here at Bookish Bluebird! *fires confetti canon* I had a blog makeover that included a name change. I've participated in 7 blog tours and 8 cover reveals. This was the first year I started using NetGalley and accepting more ARCs with was equally exciting as it was overwhelming. I started using a "review to come" method to give me more time with my thoughts but now I have a backlog of reviews to post ack. Pretty sure I'm going back to my old reviewing ways haa. For 2016, I hope to catch up on all my reviews, participate in more blog tours and blogger discussions, read more diverse books and go to a few bookish events! *raises champagne glass* Here's to another year of fantastic reads!

Review: RIDE STEADY by Kristen Ashley

Title: Ride Steady
Author: Kristen Ashley
Chaos #3
Publisher: Forever
Publication Date: June 30, 2015
The ride of her life...

Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy—until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.

Climb on and hold tight...

In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damn hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decided whether to ride steady with Carissa—or ride away forever...

"It was always you. Only you.
I was into you back then Carissa, in a big fuckin' way... And that hasn't changed."

Second chance romance at its best. Ride Steady effectively shot me in the heart and revived my 'must-read-all-KA-books' mentality after a very long KA hiatus. Joker and Carissa's story had everything I love in contemporary romance: family emphasis, endearing friendships, heart-warming romance, sexiness, an alpha male that's alpha in all the right ways, and a heroine that I wholeheartedly rooted for. I thought Shy was my number one biker boyfriend in the Chaos series, but Joker stole my heart and had me swooning to no end. [Side ramble: What is with all these hot biker names? Like Carson "Joker" Steele...*melts*]

It's highly recommended to read the books in the recommended reading order, which is in tangent with the Addicted series.

"Wherever you go, I'll go. I'll be here no matter what..."

How do I review a book that essentially ends an era? One that touched me to the core? And how do I move on from that book when it left me feeling blessed for the life I live and proud of the person I've become? I just can't without shedding more tears in the process. But I'll do my best to explain why Long Way Down is my new favorite book, and why you should start reading the Addicted series [pronto] if you aren't already. I'm just going to bare my soul to you in what I hope will be a short spoiler-free review. I apologize in advance should it make no sense at all.

>>NEW ADULT
He Will Be My Ruin

Release Date: February 2, 2016
Genre: NA, Romance, Thriller
- - -
The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her romance thriller debut with this heart pounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend's death, a story pulsing with the "intense, hot, emotional" (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

Twenty-eight-year-old Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what's left of her best friend's belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a bottle of Xanax and a handle of Maker's Mark, and never woke up. But when Maggie discovers secrets in the childhood lock box hidden in Celine's apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man who Celine herself claimed would be her ruin.

On the hunt for answers that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine's private life—and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Why? I'm a big fan of K.A. Tucker after having read her Ten Tiny Breaths series and meeting her at a signing! I love any sort of romance + suspense/thriller combo so of course, I had to add this one to my tbr :D

>>YOUNG ADULT
The Girl From Everywhere (The Girl From Everywhere #1)
by Heidi Heilig
Release Date: February 16, 2016
| +Goodreads |
Genre: YA, Fantasy, Historical, Sci-fi, Time-Travel
Publisher: Greenwillow Brooks
- - -
Heidi Heilig's debut teen fantasy sweeps from modern-day New York City to nineteenth-century Hawaii to places of myth and legend. Sixteen-year-old Nix has sailed across the globe and through centuries aboard her time-traveling father's ship. But when he gambles with her very existence, it all may be about to end. The Girl from Everywhere, the first of two books, will dazzle readers of Sabaa Tahir, Rae Carson, and Rachel Hartman.

Nix's life began in Honolulu in 1868. Since then she has traveled to mythic Scandinavia, a land from the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, modern-day New York City, and many more places both real and imagined. As long as he has a map, Nix's father can sail his ship, The Temptation, to any place, any time. But now he's uncovered the one map he's always sough—1868 Honolulu, before Nix's mother died in childbirth. Nix's life—her entire existence—is at stake. No one knows what will happen if her father changes the past. It could erase Nix's future, her dreams, her adventures...her connection with the charming Persian thief, Kash, who's been part of their crew for two years. If Nix helps her father reunite with the love of his life, it will cost her her own.

In The Girl from Everywhere, Heidi Heilig blends fantasy, history, and a modern sensibility with witty, fast-paced dialogue, breathless adventure, and enchanting romance.

Can you believe that we're already half-way into November? We're about 6 weeks away from Christmas!? Has anyone started their holiday shopping yet? I'm quite the procrastinator for all things but I'm hoping to get a few gifts crossed off this month.

I feel like the majority of my book pals have been raving about two things these past few days: November 9 by Colleen Hoover and/or Winter by Marissa Meyer. Wait for me, you guys!! *runs after the bandwagon* I still haven't finished reading Cress yet hahah.

I'm very excited about this week though because Long Way Down blog tour starts tomorrow! Krista & Becca Ritchie are superstars at planning an epic tour. I can't wait wooooot! My post will be up on Thursday but you can follow along here. Note: if you haven't read this series yet, BEWARE it's highly likely some stops will be very spoilery!

"There is no way forward that isn't through pain."

You know how you go into denial and refuse to acknowledge the fact that there is no other book, that this is actually the end, when you finish a series you loved so dearly? This was me after reading Into the Still Blue. It was an amazing conclusion to a fantastic series. I cried. I swooned. I cheered. There wasn't a single emotion I didn't feel. Characters I had disliked at the beginning eventually became my new faves. Perry, Aria and Roar (aka my golden trio) will forever hold the top rankings in this favorites list though. Eternally grateful to Siiri for pushing this series on me!

Top Ten Book To Movie Adaptations I'm Looking Forward To

- - - Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme, hosted by The Broke and The Bookish, where a new topic is given for a top ten list - - -

About half of this list have only been optioned for film that I really really hope go into production. *fingers crossed 24/7*
These are in a specific order from 'I NEED THIS TODAY' to 'Ooh sounds good, give it to me'.
[* = optioned]

1. Under the Never Sky*
With how popular CGI has gotten in films, I can imagine how amazing the Aether storms and virtual worlds would look like. And [more importantly,] I can imagine my drooling over the two actors that get cast as Perry and Roar ;)

2. Daughter of Smoke and Bone*
So I finished reading this book a few months back and loved it!
I feel like DoS&B could have LotR-potential cinematography (aka epicness).

3. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
J.K. Rowling, magical monsters and Eddie Redmayne.
Needless to say I'm really looking forward to being back in the wizarding world!

Review: HER STAND-IN BOYFRIEND by Kelly Jamieson

Title: Her Stand-In Boyfriend
Author: Kelly Jamieson
Standalone
Publisher: Entangled
Publication Date: July 15, 2015
| +Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes&Noble | Kobo |

This boyfriend business is about to get a whole lot more personal...

Event planner Lexi Mannis has a busy life in Chicago—too busy to have a boyfriend. For special occasions, she has her Stand-In Boyfriend, Mac Northrop. Mac offers (almost) all the perks of a real boyfriend—furniture assembly, a date to big events, and someone to cook for. But they've never been "with benefits"...until one wickedly hot night crosses the line.

Mac's been in love with Lexi for ages. He knows he should probably end it but dammit, he just can't. When things get deliciously down and dirty, Mac is certain that he's made the leap out of the friend zone...until Lexi decides she wants to remain friends. With benefits.

What Lexi doesn't know is that she's running out of time. And if she won't promote Mac to Real Boyfriend, she might just lose her Stand-In Boyfriend to someone else...

"All relationships take time and work... If you want it enough, you make it a priority."

Her Stand-In Boyfriend is a quick, sweet and easy read. I really enjoyed the dynamic between Lexi and Mac. Their friendship felt natural. I didn't find the story to be angsty, and the plot didn't drag on with drama which was nice. It'd be a great one to pick up in between series or whenever you're looking for something light!

Review: UPSIDE DOWN by Lia Riley

Title: Upside Down
Author: Lia Riley
Publication Date: August 5, 2014
Off The Map #1
Twenty-one-year-old Natalia Stolfi is saying good-bye to the past-and turning her life upside down with a trip to the land down under. For the next six months, she'll act like a carefree exchange student, not a girl sinking under the weight of painful memories. Everything is going according to plan until she meets a brooding surfer with hypnotic green eyes and the troubling ability to see straight through her act.

Bran Lockhart is having the worst year on record. After the girl of his dreams turned into a nightmare, he moved back home to Melbourne to piece his life together. Yet no amount of disappointment could blind him to the pretty California girl who gets past all his defenses. He's never wanted anyone the way he wants Talia. But when Bran gets a stark reminder of why he stopped believing in love, he and Talia must decide if what they have is once in a lifetime . . . or if they were meant to live a world apart.
 -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -  -
"Leaving is the only way to move forward. If I never get lost, I'll never be found."

Witty and heart-warming. Talia and Bran pulled at my heart strings. From the moment they met, I had an inkling that they'd have me grinning and giggling (which they did). It was instant chemistry between the two. I really enjoyed how their relationship grew. But there were many times where I wanted to shake either characters, I must admit. Both Talia and Bran are flawed, but it's how they owned up to their mistakes that made me root for them even harder.

Why I Won't Be Reading LIFE AND DEATH (Twilight 10th Anniversary Edition)

I didn't even realize it was the 10th anniversary of Twilight until I came across the new edition at the bookstore. There was a big display with multiple copies. The iconic hands holding an apple drawing my attention. I thought Stephanie Meyer finally reconsidered and released Midnight Sun. I was close to happy tears. But 'Twilight Reimagined'? I'll admit, I was very intrigued at the concept but not enough to actually read it. I'd like to make it clear though that I LOVE TWILIGHT. I even purchased a Vietnamese edition when I spent a summer in Vietnam. New Moon had me crying so hard. Eclipse had me gushing. The final book was meh for me but I won't get into the reasons why heheh.

I first read Twilight in 2006. At that time I was more into fantasy books like Inkheart and Silverwing but my friend insisted I read it for Edward Cullen. Please note that I had never read a contemporary/paranormal romance book before this. There was a lot of giggling and blushing when kisses were mentioned (I was a very innocent child ;) ). Edward Cullen was my first book boyfriend!  He was a gentleman and attentive. He was the perfect guy in my eyes and I was Team Edward for the longest time until I watched the movies. I'm sorry but Robert Pattinson just wasn't how I imagined Edward. I was Team Jacob when it came to the movies. I mean, Taylor Lautner woooo *fans self* [But really I was all about the cute and sexy half-naked werewolves hahah].

Anyway, back to the main point of my post, I won't be reading Life and Death. The main reason being that my tastes in books have changed drastically since then. I prefer Adult and NA contemporary romance now. I prefer heroines that have backbone and won't easily be manipulated by a handsome face. I also prefer books without love triangles (most of the time). It's been ages since I reread the Twilight saga, and I don't see a reread in my future. Nonetheless these books hold a very dear place in my heart and always will. It was the series that got me into reading romance novels after all!

Have you read Life and Death? Why or why not? To those who have read it, I am definitely interested to know what you thought and what the new character names are!

Life is short, and it's more bitter than sweet, so she tries to smile as often as her face allows. She enjoys stories with happy endings, because life is full of way too many unhappy ones.
